Without a specific example it's going to be kind of difficult to help you. Checkers like any other mental sport (chess, go, mancala, etc...) requires two elements to become a good player. One is practice, playing a lot of games will help. And don't just "go through the motions", put a little bit of thought into each move. Eventually, over time, your concentration should improve. Two is study...save some of the games you loose and go over them. Try and see where you went wrong, and even find a way you could have even turned the tables on your opponent. There are a few good books for beginners to study

 1. Millard Hopper, Win at Checkers
 2. Fred Reinfeld, How to Win at Checkers
 3. Robert Pike, Play Winning Checkers
 4. Richard Pask, Starting Out in Checkers

All of these books can be ordered from Amazon.com or from your local bookstore. I've included down in sources a few good links to go over that'll help as well. Good Luck!
