This video explores the Magnus Smith Trap, coined after the three time Canadian Chess Champion Magnus Smith. It’s a trap that white can play in the Sozin (also known as Fischer variation) of the Sicilian Defence.

instead of ..dxe5, what if just ..d5 (attacking whites bishop?
12.Nf6+ Ke7 13.Bg5 and its all over, (he cant even play 13.-h6 because of 14.Ng8+ or 13.Qa5+ 14. c3 h6? 15.Sg8+ Kd7 16. 0-0-0 Kc7 17. Bd8
what if black would just take my white pawn with his D6 pawn instead of moving his queen and putting me in check?
whats my best move after that?
Nxd5 cxN 2. Bxd5 d6 3.BxR winning two pawn and a exchange
well, it LOOKS like a great move. it brings the queen out and wins you a pawn, as well as attacking along the diagonal to the rook. so it looks like a fine move.
you don’t mention what would happen if the black knight went to g4 instead of h5. I figured it out on my own. It’s not good for black but its somewhat complicated.
nice video, but i would never give check with the queen on a5, i dont see why somebody would play that move, if they were not a total beginner
Hey man thanks a lot for this video!I play on FICS too and I’m sure I’ve seen a lot of people using the Sicilian defense, so this video has been very useful for me.
Now I think I’m going to check out all of your other vids to learn as much as I can.
Keep it up,
Captaingilmo.
Thanks thebonedance!
Good comment boodaguy – and you’re correct, traps definitely require some “if’s” in order for them to work and chess is definitely full of variety!
Great discussion!
Thanks for the feedback Willis – I post standard time control game analysis. I will be posting more of those in the future and plan on also posting my tournament games when I get going with an official national rating. Thanks for checking out the vid!
You should post some of your FICS games on here. I’ve looked at them, and I think you should study the game more.
One possible continuation is
1.. Nd5
2cxd5 Bxd5+-, white attacks rock on a8 also f7 square
when at 2:47 and white plays Qf3 to attack the f7 pawn why can’t black play or what would happen if black played d5. i understand this is just a video showing a trap but i am still interested in knowing what the outcome might be
Doesn’t the black bishop give a check to white knig and them remove the white queen with the rook
not true. the whole queen trapping thing doesnt have to happen.. black’s position is screwed up.
what Programm is ?
in either cases consider BxQ
The problem with traps is that there’s always an “IF” involved. Of course, I love this trap, especially when white traps the queen, which I love doing from time to time. The problem is, the opponent HAS to play certain moves in order for the trap to work. On the other hand, if there was an automatic-win-no-matter-what trap, then the whole game would be ruined. And that’s where the whole fun in chess comes in. Variety is the spice of life, and chess is FULL of variety. Great video.
Great video.
i like this trap, but it sort of requires some greed as well as stupidity on behalf of your opponent, so it’s a bit conditional
You rock. Your other video for the Ruis Lopez trap got me hooked. I play chess with my dad a LOT and he loves the Lopez. =)
Thanks for making these traps videos. =)
i tried this but i got smashed still
“the black player” “the white knights” i know its juvenile but still funny. ps. i do love your videos they do help.
